Working Girl. 9-5. Etc.

29 Apr

So I got the job that I wanted, and am thankful. It was weird going back in to work full time today though, after being such a slacker. Although I wasn’t entirely a slacker as I kept pretty busy. But I wasn’t being paid to be kept busy. If you know what I mean. Anyway, on Friday they asked if I could start Monday, so there wasn’t a great deal of time to mentally adjust to the concept. Thankfully their office hours really are 9 – 5. So no early rising for me is necessary. Sweet.

Nice crew, very upbeat and positive environment. So different from some previous jobs. Helps that I’m not working with corrupt/gross/greedy government officials/people/companies (and if you’re someone I used to work with that is reading about this and think I’m talking about you, I’m probably not). The initial learning curve is something I never enjoy though – not knowing what you’re really supposed to be doing, having wrong expectations, trying to ask questions that will help you figure out the important stuff. I know it will all come together in a few weeks as it always does, but these initial days are normally just…awkward.

Things I already like…. 1) two block walk to work 2) working with people who really want to help their community 3) working with people who are very genuinely positive 4) work that is very practical. Hey, I actually think I might really be helping people who actually need help. Wow!

Now that I’m working full time, I don’t have as much time to devote to fun stuff, like cooking. Had to get back to meal planning, especially as I’m trying to be back in plant-based health kick mode. Tonight was marinated and grilled portobello mushrooms over curried brown rice salad and greens. Mmmm.

Easy, delicious, and soooo healthy. Everything is prepare ahead-able except for the mushroom grilling which takes about 10 minutes.

I just realized it’s nearly 11. Now that it is light outside later and later, I am having a hard keeping track of time. And now that I am a contributing member of the economy, I must get my beauty sleep. TTFN.

Spicy

16 Apr

Been getting some little projects done at the boy’s. One thing I’ve wanted to do for a while was build a spice rack and use small tins for all the spices. Although construction was shoddy given lack of tools and space to build it, it still turned out pretty ok.

It was pretty easy to do, and a lot cheaper than buying something that would fit a lot of tins.

In general I think you can build pretty much anything if you put your mind to it – let’s see what I do next….

Shattered Dreams

15 Apr

Your tax person emails, says you’re getting 95% of the money you gave to the IRS back. It’s too good to be true, she must be a genius, I’m going to get her to redo my taxes for the last 10 years, I’m going to do x-y-z with the money…..

You go in to her office to sign your return, you see that she forgot to include 75% of your income.

Dreams shattered, game over.

(I did get 10% of my contributions back though, better than owing)

Has it Been That Long Again?

10 Apr

Oh, I am dreadful at this. I knew I would be. At least I’m updating once a month!

So….spring is not here. It sort of was, and snow was melting, and then it came back with a vengeance as we had around 18″ of snow dumped on us over the last few days. More is predicted later this week. Wow! I’m getting ready for spring, but I think I’ll go for a ski tomorrow and enjoy it while it’s still there.

The days are getting long though…sun is setting after 9pm now. It’s throwing me off, and making it hard to keep track of time.

I accepted a job offer from a large corporation, then decided during the training it wasn’t for me, so after two weeks I left. I knew going into it this would happen…but at least I tried. I was clear with them as well that I wasn’t sure this was a great fit. Ah well.

Had a second interview for a job I’d really like, and hopefully the final interview next week. It’s not a sure thing, but I’d sure like it to work out. If not though, something else is around the corner.

Finished all  my tax paperwork tonight…that was a bear, digging up all the expenses. After I ran numbers through a simple tax estimator I am pretty sure I am on target and won’t owe anything. I hope this is right….

Otherwise, just plugging along. The training I went to was in Portland so it was nice to have some decent weather and be in a different place for a spell. But I was really glad to get back home.

And…

Well…

That’s about all I have to report.
